The Price of Glory: Verdun 1916 by Alistair Horne. Verdun was the battle which lasted ten months; the battle in which at least 700,000 men fell, along a front of 15 miles; the battle whose aim was less to defeat the enemy than bleed him to death on the battleground whose once fertile terrain is even now "the nearest thing to desert in Europe". This book is more than a chronicle of the facts of the battle. It is a sympathetic study of the men who fought there, and shows that Verdun is a key to understanding World War I No Victor, No Vanquished: The Arab-Israeli War, 1973 by Edgar O'Ballance. In 1973 Arab invasions of Israeli territories challenged Israeli technology and troops alike, creating the largest land battle since World War II. This coverage of that war by a veteran miliary writer blends his personal knowledge of the Middle East with fine research into the conflict: the result should be basic required reading for any student of Israeli history or this particular war.
